Name: Demeter
Gender: Female
Age: Adolescent
Tribe: Jellicle
Tribe Position: Member
Family: Unknown
Appearance: vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/catsmusical/images/e/e4/London_Demeter_1.jpg/revision/latest/zoom-crop/width/320/height/320?cb=20140209185915
Personality: Demeter is quite the skittish cat due to her past. She constantly fears someone, namely Macavity or one of his HenchCats, may attack her. Thus, she usually stays close to other Jellicles and hates being alone. Any odd sound or shadows can set her mind ablaze with worry, so she likes to keep busy to forget her fears. Despite her fear, she’s not antisocial. In fact, she likes to share a laugh with others, but you won’t see her striking up a conversation as she’s too shy for that. She also has a very formal speech pattern at times.
Ever since her relationship with Macavity, she’s learned not to trust toms, at least not in a romantic ways. As soon as a tom approaches her in a flirty way she’s more than likely going to walk away and act defensively. While not a skilled fighter, she tries her best to defend herself and will even spend some time alone training her fighting skills, refusing to be powerless and needing to be saved by the Jellicles.
She’s also quite secretive, keeping her past from everyone and never speaking of it. However, she tries to forget what has been and focuses on the present and the feeling of family among the Jellicles. She prefers to act as if nothing’s wrong, keeping her carefree mask on. Deep inside, she really does wish she could be that carefree, but knows that Macavity is probably still lurking, waiting for a chance to pounce.
Faults: Skittish, secretive, anxious, distrusting of toms
Describing word: Anxious, skittish, friendly
History: (This may not be how her history was imagined by the musical’s creators, but this is how I always thought her life went. Note: all ages mentioned in this thread will be in human years)
Demeter was a typical Jellicle kitten, playing out in the Yard all day, enjoying the company of her fellow tribemates. She loved to spend her days with her friends Macavity and Bombalurina, just playing games and waiting to grow up and take responsibility within the tribe like all the grown cats.
As she grew older, when she was around 8 she discovered she had a talent for hunting and would often go on long hunting trips, enjoying the feeling of helping feed her tribe, even if she only brought back one small mouse at times. Sometimes she would be joined by Macavity, when the tom wasn’t too busy. He always said it was too dangerous to go out alone. She would simply shrug it off and let him come, eight paws caught more than four anyway. Never thinking much of it, she was quite surprised when he declared his love to her when she was 15. She had no idea what to do, but agreed to be his mate after a day of thinking. They were friends and as far as she knew, good things could come out of it. Bombalurina was happy to see her two friends happy together.
As it turned out, both of them were wrong about the ginger tabby. It was soon discovered he had committed a terrible crime and he was cast out as a traitor two years later. Heartbroken to see it, not believing he would do such a thing, she naively followed him as he left the tribe. They settled in what is now known as HenchCat territory and lived an alright life, as Macavity was gathering followers.
But he’d become bitter and cruel, vengeful. And he took all the anger out on Demeter, beating her, never listening to her and only being content when she did exactly as he told her. Yet he claimed he still loved her, but she knew better.
Knowing she had to leave, she snuck out one night when Macavity was out on a patrol and headed back to Jellicle territory after a year under Macavity's rule. The Jellicles were distrusting and suspicious at first, thinking she was a spy for her mate. She never told them what happened, but she swore by Heavyside she wasn’t on his side anymore and begged to be taken in. They obliged and she was allowed to stay. Glad to finally be protected, she lived on, yet the traumas still haunted her in her nightmares.
Those nightmares came true at the most recent Jellicle Ball when Macavity tried to take her back again, claiming she was his to keep. Luckily, her tribemates managed to drive the foul cat away and save her from his clutches. Ever since, Demeter has sunk into herself even more, fearing the next time he’ll come back, attempting to live the best life she can with her fears.
RP Sample:
Demeter woke up after yet another nightmare, her claws unsheathed and dug into the piece of cloth she slept on. Her eyes darted around for a brief moment before she let out a sigh. *Just a dream, Deme, breathe.* she told herself. She itched to go for a walk, but knew it could cost her, so she just sat up and gazed at the stars. They twinkled majestically in the dark sky. *How far away from problems you are, my dears. Sometimes I do wish I could join you.* A sound snapped her out of her thoughts, but it turned out to be a small mouse. Shaking her head, the queen lay back down, determined to sleep, to stay calm. She closed her eyes and slowly, sleep took her away. This time, she did not dream.
