Name: Old Deuteronomy
Gender: male
Age: older than dirt
Tribe: Jellicle
Tribe Position: Jellicle Leader
Family: Mates, several, all deceased (some say 9 others 99-a gentletom doesn't tell), Sons: Macavity, Munkustrap, Coricopat, The Rum Tum Tugger, Daughters: Tantomile, Jemima
Appearance: Large Maine Coon-in cat terms around 25-30 lbs, umm. . .mostly muscle As a large older cat, he does suffer from arthritis & this causes him to walk slowly with a dignified ponderous gait. His coat is long & luxurious in a motley pattern of stripes in brown, grey, black & gold. He has an interestingly craggy face-that clearly shows the long & sometimes difficult life that he’s lived. His eyes are his most striking feature-they are a brilliant deep gold. It isn’t just their physical looks that are the most striking, but their expression. His wise, loving, compassionate soul lives in those eyes, freely offering these gifts to any of his beloved Jellicles. Despite being constantly 'lionized', Deuteronomy is actually quite modest & isn't comfortable with this type of adulation.
Personality: Deuteronomy is the personification of “Gentletom”. He considers himself the main father figure of his tribe & tries to be compassionate & easily approachable. His manners are impeccable & even more refined than Bustopher’s. He doesn’t speak often, but he listens very well & when he does speak it’s to the point. He has a wonderful sense of humor, loves to join his Jellicles in a good time & encourages them to express themselves. His sense of the absurd & sense of the dramatic are almost as strong as his friend, Gus Sr.
The Jellicle Ball is the highlight of his year & despite not being able to dance anymore, he enjoys watching & appreciates the artistry of his kittens.
He has a bone deep gentility & a strong sense of “Noblesse Oblige” In chivalric terms, he has a strong code of honor & would be considered a knight in the purest sense of the word.
On the down side, he is often too trusting & slow to act when action is called for. He does have a temper, but it is rarely seen. He hates to hurt or punish anyone-even when richly deserved. With the possible exception of Macavity, he loves his family & tribe fiercely & would gladly lay down his life for them-which is both good & bad as sometimes he thinks too much of the good of the individual over the needs of the many.
Describing word: Wise
History: “Famous in Proverb & Famous in Rhyme” much of old Deuteronomy’s history is lost to the mists of time & legend. If you believe the stories, he has ’lived many lives in succession a long while before Queen Victoria’s Accession’ In other words, some say he was there at almost every important point in history-from the building of the ark with Noah all the way to Egypt’s cat worshippers, to possibly Being Whittington’s famous cat. How much of these stories are true & how many are legend is unknown & Deuteronomy isn’t talking.
His recent past is fairly straightforward. He has outlived many fine queens’ & right now isn’t looking for another romantic entanglement-one because he doesn’t like to show favoritism, two because all the queens are just too young (even Jenny & Jelly are like young princesses to him), & third because it gets very depressing to bury them all.
He does, however love to watch the romantic entanglements of the young & can be an inveterate matchmaker. He does not confirm or deny stories of his past wildness in Gus Sr’s stories.
He has several children that he’s very proud of. . .then there’s Macavity. He’s still not sure where he went wrong with this son-perhaps a litter box training incident? On the surface, they are deadly enemies, but he can’t help but hope there is a shred of good in this black sheep son somewhere. There have been several attempts on his life & freedom by this son & he can quietly sympathize with his youngest, Jemima, in that he gets guarded very closely as well.
His dream is to build a strong, thriving community of Jellicles where there is a place for all who wish to live in peace.
RP Sample: Old Deuteronomy stood in the shadows, listening to the argument between two of his newest Jellicle children. They had gotten off on the wrong paw with each other & didn’t know how to back down. Each had a valid point & as he listened he pondered if he should get involved or let them fight it out. Sadly, sometimes it hurt the situation more in the long run, if someone else was always solving things for them.
He decided to stay out of it for now, but resolved to drop a word in a few receptive ears for further action if necessary.
Comments: Old Deuteronomy is a larger than life character-no one could ever live up to his reputation & he doesn’t try. Perversely-this seems to confirm that reputation more often than not. Many think he is a mystic of some sort, but he has no powers other than profound compassion & wisdom.
Now, he does have one important task (other than as leader of course) which many argue is a mystic power, & that is the Jellicle Choice. He claims that all he does is use his judgement to choose, & it's up to the Everlasting Cat to accept or deny.
