Rhytt also noticed how frequently the strange thin tom kept glancing in his direction. He tried giving a friendly smile when Jelly introduced him, and had raised his paw to wave in a gesture that came naturally to him, and a gesture he did out of habit. But all the toms defenses came back full force when he saw Rhytt's paw lift. Mentally he chastised himself and his smile faded in an instant. Stupid...how could he be so stupid. Rhytt was beginning to wonder if his presence was what was making the new tom so leery. While he wasn't muscular or all that imposing, he was one of the tallest toms in the junkyard, and he supposed that his height could come across has being a threat. He use to live on the streets, he knew which cats to avoid, and bigger ones (no matter how skinny) were always wise to steer clear of. But he didn't know if he should risk leaving Jelly alone. If the tom did anything to Jelly while he was gone, that would haunt his conscience.
Ragnvald's fur stood on end and he had fully backed into the corner he had been hovering around. He didn't cower, but he did feel on the defensive. His eyes stayed on Rhytt wondering if and when the tom would raise a paw against him again. After everything, he couldn't take any chances with any new animals. He did hear Jelly and his mind was able to pick up enough to realize she was trying to tell him that the big one was friendly. But actions...actions spoke louder to him. Words got in the way, and his body posture was on alert, ready to jump in and pounce. Anything but friendly. Ragnvald wouldn't relax around him, not when he could get pounced on the second he did. It took him a second and a few stuttered attempts, but he finally managed to say,"No."
Rhytt's eyes lowered and his shoulders sagged at that. He was clearly not doing well at the whole first contact thing. Jelly had some training with bedside manner, though he wondered how she was able to so easily keep her composure around a tom that looked like he was feral and ready to attack the next thing that moved. Still, he was clearly doing something wrong and he just couldn't seem to fix it. "Jelly. Would it be better if I left? I won't go far. I'd be just outside if you needed my help." He gave a sidelong stare at Ragnvald. "I don't think I'm doing you any favors in here." Obviously, if Jelly felt more comfortable with backup, he'd stay and try to do better.
