the frail old tom laughed, "it is all right boys! I picked up while the train with the traveling troupe was snow bound for, oh three days or more." Gus shrugged "there was little else to do. so is the Yard quiet? one would gather so, after all with the Henches about and many of our able bodied abroad one can never be too sure." the old cat said stretching with an alarming series of pops.

Alonzo started to refuse his brother's offer, but then reconsidered. His first thought had been, he didn't want to seem to be shirking his responsibilities by dragging Misto along with him; and besides, he probably had only offered out of politeness. And then, he might be a distraction, when Alonzo needed to be on full alert. But, Alonzo reflected, hadn't he just been thinking of how important Misto and his powers were to the Junkyard? And, he thought guiltily, he'd not spent much time with his younger brother lately--and if Misto's earlier comments were any indication, this was making him feel like the Jellicles feared him. Surely no one wanted him to think that. And after all, why not allow him to learn something about protecting? In time, Misto could be a great asset to protecting the 'yard; what he lacked in size, his powers could easily make up for, and more skills could be achieved if they'd help him learn.
"Sure, Misto. That'd be nice," he answered finally.
He turned back toward Gus. "I don't know how to play Rummy," he admitted. "Though," he added, "I don't know much about those tech-ish things you're talking about, either, Misto. Truth be told, I've scarcely seen a human lately, and haven't kept up with their goings-on... And yes, the 'yard's been quiet so far. It's just there aren't as many Protectors around at the moment, so I want to be extra careful."

Misto initially thought that Alonzo would turn down his offer, but he was pleasantly surprised. His white lips peeled back into a toothy smile, and he was more than happy to have not been turned down.
"Great. I'll stay quiet and out of the way. I'm just dreadfully bored." This would not only give him something to do, but also give him a chance to spend some time with his brother without being interrupted, hopefully. His luck they'd run into some distressed queen or unwanted trouble. Either way, he didn't want Alonzo to feel as if he needed to protect him. Mistoffelees was more than capable of defending himself now-a-days, unlike their kitten years.
Turning his black head to look at Gus, he grimaced slightly at the sound of popping. "You might want to run by Jenny's to get something for that..." He figured it came with age, but still, surely Jenny had some ointment or something to help with aching bones. "Munkustrap may want to look into recruiting more Protectors if things are getting worse. I can't imagine they're getting better." He gave a half-hearted shrug, looking somewhat at a loss for suggestions.

Alonzo had to agree with his brother's assessment of things not getting better, but he didn't want to cause Misto more worry than he already had by admitting there was currently something amiss. He compromised with a sort of noncommittal half-shrug. "Perhaps he will, depending how things go with this rescue. And...well, I'd like to think apart from caring for injured cats and being aware of any possible hench attack, things should stay peaceful. But I suppose it's better safe than sorry. If he does, maybe..." He stopped himself short of saying something akin to "I could suggest you to him," or "I could put in a good word for you." Doing his best not to make Misto feel he still saw him as a baby kit who needed someone to hold his paw. "Maybe you can ask to be considered," he finished instead. "Truth told," he couldn't help adding, "there are only so many cats who aren't too young or too elderly... but if the potentials like you, and even Tumble if he could grow up a bit, could be trained, then maybe...well, we'll see," he ended abruptly. It was starting to sound too much like he was trying to take over Munkustrap's job or something, he really had no authority to do any 'recruiting.'

Shaking his head, Misto smirked and stifled a laugh. "No, no. Being a protector isn't in the cards for me. That's all you." The black tuxedo tom ran a hand through his short head fur. "I'm not like you or Munkustrap. You're a different breed all together. It is almost as if you were born for what you do...I'm willing to help when needed, but I don't have what it takes, nor the drive to do what you do." He appreciated his brother's support and faith in him, but Mistoffelees wasn't like his brother. He wasn't the debonaire hero made to save the damsel in distress or constantly be on watch for unwanted enemies. Alonzo fit that bill - he did not.
"Besides, if I did what you did, you'd grow tired of me always being around." He grinned, elbowing his brother. He was glad to help his brother, but he couldn't do this on a daily basis. As the twins would say, it wasn't his destiny.
Clearing his throat, the magician glanced forward, ears alert. "So, where to first? Do we need to check on anyone?"

Alonzo managed to chuckle along with Misto, though it was a rather feeble one. Truth told, the harlequin tom felt utterly, utterly foolish. To listen to his brother mentioning that his powers could be useful to the Tribe, musing over the fact that Munkustrap might need to recruit more protectors--and Alonzo had immediately jumped to the conclusion that Misto had ambitions of becoming a protector, as if that were the only possible way of contributing to the Tribe. Just goes to show I don't know my own brother at all--or I'm a self-centered brute who can't even fathom the idea of helping the Tribe except by fighting...
He shrugged, trying to keep his tone light, "Well, I don't know about growing tired of you, but I expect you'd grow tired of us slow ones who only had brute strength and hadn't your powers." He was struck by a sudden, almost-comical image in his mind's eye, of Misto electrocuting Macavity or some such notion. He thought of mentioning it, but then decided against it: Macavity was no laughing matter at all.
"There does seem to be some sort of a to-do near the gates," Alonzo observed in answer to Misto's last question. "Suppose we head that way and see if there's any fresh news of the rescue party?"

"Ah, we all have our talents." he said, crossing his arms behind his back, letting a few sparkles cascade over his shoulders with a wink. " I'm good and zapping things, and you're good and lifting heavy objects - what a team." Misto chuckled. The image of Alonzo as some overly ripped body-builder flashed in his mind. It was both humorous and disturbing, but nonetheless earned another grin from the black tom.
Nodding, Misto cleared his throat, trying to regain some seriousness. " Right, sure. Hopefully they rescued whomever it was that needed rescuing." He hoped they had done so with little to no problems. But, if he was truthful, he seriously doubted that. From his observations, rescues and missions rarely went smoothly, though, he always hoped for that magical first time.
"Do you know who caused this fiasco? Was it Macavity related or human related?"

Alonzo hesitated before answering, but only for a moment. He'd already told Misto so much, why bother to demure?
"From what I understand, it's human-related. Cats being held captive in someplace called..." He frowned, trying to remember the words that had been used to describe the place. His only real contact with humans had been with their uncle's human family; as such, he'd until recently more or less thought of humans as nice creatures who amused themselves by keeping cats and dogs as companions. But if evil cats such as Macavity and the henches could exist, it only stood to reason there were humans who were just as bad. "A laboratory. Kept them for 'experiments.' I don't rightly understand exactly what that means, but it doesn't sound good." He cleared his throat, deciding that was quite enough on that topic, thankful he didn't know enough to give more detail. "Of course they did. I'm certain they did," he added, though as much to reassure himself as his brother. "Even if they couldn't get everyone out, now they'll have learnt more about the place and can return for any others..." He kept glancing towards the front gates. "I do believe that's a welcome-party of sorts over there. Munkustrap will be along soon, rescuees in tow, and they'll of course need looking after." He gave an involuntary grimace, imagining the states these cats might be in when they got here... Doubtless it would be much like prisoners rescued from Macavity, having been locked up and tortured for months... Hurt, demoralized, frightened of everything that moved, scarred for life... The Jellicles could rescue them physically, but would they ever be back to the way they once were?
((I love that they both got comical mental images of each other XD Dying over here. Anyway, shall we move over to the Welcome Home thread soon? After the rescuers/rescuees have entered, perhaps? Meanwhile I don't mind keeping up the conversation in this thread as long as it can last. It may be a little while yet before everyone's posted in Welcome Home ^^))

((Yeah, that works for me, as long as the rpers over there are fine with us joining! ))
"Hmmmm..." Mistoffelees's brow creased in concern as he glanced at his feet as he contemplated Alonzo's explanation. "If they were experimented on, or witnessed some sort of torture, they'll have either mental or physical trauma, if not both. The healers will have quite their hands full for some time." It might not be what anyone wanted to hear, but it was the truth. He highly doubted that any cat freed from captivity, let alone a laboratory, would walk away unscathed. It was unfortunate.
"Hopefully they got them all first round. If they didn't, whomever might be left will be harder to free. Humans are cautious creatures. If they see that they've escaped, they'll up their security." Mistoffelees didn't have humans - he didn't want them. Truthfully, Misto didn't trust them. He realized some of the jellicles had humans and decent ones as well, but still, they were fickle creatures that could turn on their feline companions at any time. At least, that was his observation. "My teleportation skills are lacking, but if they have to go back, I can probably disarm any security measures by frying them, so to speak." There was a lot he could do with his electrical based magic. The more he practiced, the more he figured he could do.

((I think that thread was meant to be a sort of "gathering thread" for any and all Jellicles, but it's gotten a bit busy, so I will definitely ask and make sure it's ok. ) Alonzo's heartrate quickened as Misto spoke. Clearly his brother knew even more about these matters than he himself did, so there'd been little use in his giving a minimal explanation in order to shield the younger tom from anything. He half wished Misto hadn't mentioned how traumatized the rescuees would be, nor how difficult it would be to rescue any remaining captives.
"Well, I'm...sure Jenn and Jelly will know how to help any traumatized cats, and of course the rest of us will do what we can," Alonzo said, feeling stupidly naive even as the words left his mouth. No doubt Misto was right--for most of their new 'acquaintances,' recovery would be a long time coming. "And if the humans are as clever as all that, we'll simply have to be cleverer," he added, in a somewhat sharper tone than he'd intended. He knew Misto wasn't doubting anyone's abilities, but only stating facts. Still, the thought that they might not be able to rescue any remaining captives angered the harlequin to no end. No reason to think of that now, he chided himself.
"I'm sure your abilities will come in handy when the time comes," he told Misto with an attempted smile, trying to make up for his irritable tone a moment ago.

Mistoffelees hummed in agreement, though, truthfully, he was wary of interacting with these new cats. He didn't know how to handle distressed strangers - especially those who had been in the situation they had been in. He wasn't good and comforting anyone. Nevertheless, he nodded, knowing he'd have to try should the situation arise.
"Well, it is better than picking at locks with bones." the tux shrugged thoughtfully, kicking at a can as he walked. "But maybe it won't come to that. Who knows, they could have been completely successful." If so, all was left was for Jenn to check them for injuries, and for Jelly to give them whatever concoction she thought useful to help ease their discomfort.
"On another note, have you see our sister lately? I haven't, though, she has never really checked in with me." He smirked, eyes cutting upwards to look at Alonzo. Even though he was older by just a few minutes, Victoria always acted as if she was older than him. He found it humorous, but Vicky had a mind of her own.

Alonzo nodded. "Let's hope so. I know that, with Munk at the helm, the operation had to have been as near a complete success as possible. If we have got to go back in...It would certainly be an enormous help, not having to pick locks." He was anxious to speak to Munkustrap and hear for himself how it had gone - speculating was racking at his nerves. He was grateful when Misto introduced a new topic.
Only, the topic turned out to be their sister. Alonzo bit his lip and tried to hide his discomfort, much use that was with his brother being so keen. How was it Misto managed to remind Alonzo of all his worst failings? If he felt he didn't know his brother quite as well as he had when they were small, this uncertainty was increased tenfold when it came to Victoria. The harlequin tried to tell himself it was due to her being so fiercely independent, but he knew he hadn't tried as hard as he might to keep up with her. Truth told, he was afraid - of what, exactly, he didn't know. That she disliked him? Blamed him for their parents' deaths? She'd never given him reason to think so, but she also hadn't chosen to come along with Alonzo and Misto and immerse herself in Jellicle life as they had done. That was her decision, but it made Alonzo uneasy somehow - it meant he saw her even less than before and hardly knew what she was up to at a given time. What sort of a brother didn't look out for his sister? If something happened to her, it would be on him...
Shaking his head to clear it, he answered Misto, "I haven't seen her in some time, either. I ought to find her, make sure she knows about that place and the dangers...not that'd she'd listen..." He shut his mouth rapidly, he hadn't meant to say that last bit out loud. How did he know if she'd listen or not, anyway, when he hardly ever saw her? That was just the feeling he got.

Misto smiled, "I'm sure she is fine." He reached over, grabbing hold of Alonzo's shoulder and shaking him playfully. "Besides, I am sure if she needed one of us, she'd come to us. She's about as stubborn and sure of herself as we are." Well, he couldn't quite speak for Alonzo, but he and Victoria had that similarity. "I have heard word though that she is pulling away from our uncle, which means she may come to reside here permanently at some point, who knows." The black tux shrugged. Mistoffelees didn't have anything against Bustopher, after all, the large tom had taken them in and raised them when their mother died; however, it was no secret that Misto wasn't his favorite. Bustopher's help had once told him that it was because Misto reminded him of their father, whom Bustopher never liked. Regardless, they got along fine. He was glad to be on his own though now.
Speaking of their parents, Misto's mood shifted. His brown eyes glanced downwards and his ears flattened slightly. It was odd - he couldn't say he remember either of them well enough to miss them, but he often wondered about the hunches that attacked that night. He wondered whether or not any of them were still alive. It was something he occasionally thought of, and he sometimes wondered if there was any point in trying to find them. It was probably something he needed to let go, after all, he had no clue where to start, and he wasn't exactly welcome in the warehouse. No, Macavity would surely have his hide if he set foot in his territory.

Alonzo made a noncomittal sort of "Hmmm" sound when Misto asserted that Vick would come to her brothers for help if she needed it. He'd have to take Misto's word for it on that one, he wasn't so sure. For himself, Alonzo didn't feel he'd ever given Victoria good reason to depend on him or turn to him in trouble. "Oh, is she?" he added in some surprise as Misto mentioned their sister's pulling away from their uncle. A twinge of guilt struck him, wondering how Bustopher would take it. No doubt it felt like all his sister's kits were deserting him one by one--but really, could he have expected to keep them in his care forever? There was more to life than proper manners and wandering from place to place begging scraps from humans. "I do hope uncle doesn't think we're ungrateful," Alonzo remarked, "but truthfully, the Junkyard is a safer place for all of us. More numbers and all that. Uncle'd be pretty defenseless if one day henches decided--" He stopped there, why bring up one more thing to worry about? "That is, it might be a good idea for him to take up permanent residence in the 'yard as well."
He glanced at his brother, who seemed now to be thinking of something else. Had his mention of henches brought back memories of--? But he didn't even know if Misto - or Victoria, for that matter - even remembered what had happened to their parents. He was afraid to ask.

”Oh, but you know he won’t.” Misto said, turning around to walk backwards so that he faced Alonzo momentarily. He wasn’t clumsy in the least bit, so he didn’t worry about whether or not he’d stumble. ”I care for our uncle, but you know he’d never live in a place like this. It is beneath him.” The tux shrugged, turning back around to walk normally. ”He probably thinks it is beneath us too, but there is little he can do about that.” He remembered Bustopher protesting their moving to the junkyard; heavyside only knew what he’d say if Victoria did the same.
Speaking of the white queen, Misto paused and his head tilted. ”I think Viccy is in the yard’,” he said suddenly, moving quickly to catch up with Alonzo’s strides. He may not be as intuitive as the twins, but he sensed enough to know she was close. Very close, actually.
”We should bump into her, actually.”
((I am good to bring Victoria in if you are still okay with it!))
